10 Songs About Solar Eclipses to Add To Your Playlist

This year’s solar eclipse is fastly approaching. What better what to prepare than with a playlist full of songs about eclipses? All of the songs on the list mention eclipses or the sun. Our employees are excited to share this fun mix of music as we wait for this year’s total solar eclipse.

On August 21, a total solar eclipse will be visible throughout North America for the first time in decades. As we plan a solar eclipse watch party at our headquarters, we decided to pull together a list of eclipse-themed jams. There is something in this list for everyone!

Take a look:

1. Total Eclipse of the Heart – Bonnie Tyler

Our first song is our marketing manager Laura’s favorite from this list: Bonnie Tyler’s “Total Eclipse of the Heart.”

2. Black Hole Sun – Soundgarden

“Black hole sun/Won’t you come…” Yes Soundgarden; It will be here on August 21!

3. Dark Star – Grateful Dead

During a solar eclipse, the sun literally becomes a dark star, like the name of this classic Grateful Dead jam. Here’s the definitive 23-minute live rendition of the third song our playlist by the Dead in 1969.

4. Walking On the Sun – Smash Mouth

Let’s pick it up a bit with this next song from a very popular band from the ’90’s: Smash Mouth. Most famously known for their song “All Star,” the use the sun as a metaphor in “Walking on the Sun.”

5. A Place in the Sun – Stevie Wonder

Halfway through our playlist, we throw in “A Place in the Sun,” by Stevie Wonder because the moon looks as though it finds a place in the sun during an eclipse.

6. Eclipse – Pink Floyd

The sixth song on our list is “Eclipse.” As the last notes you hear at the end of Dark Side of the Moon, “Eclipse,” was a no-brainer for our list.

7. Bad Moon Rising – Creedence Clearwater Revival

While the moon isn’t bad for eclipsing the sun, this upbeat song from Creedence Clearwater Revival is favorite of many and the next song on our playlist.

8. Solar Eclipses – Hollywood Principles ft. Dr. Awkward

This song titled “Solar Eclipses” was launched onto our list by the popular video game Rocket League. The lyric “To afraid to look/Too afraid to miss it,” doesn’t apply to you as long as you have the correct safety glasses!

9. Walking on Sunshine – Katrina & The Waves

When the moon begins to move away from the sun, this song is a great upbeat way to welcome the sun back. You’ll probably start to feel good once the sunshine comes back!

10. Here Comes the Sun – the Beatles

Another great song to welcome the sun back is this positive track from the Beatles. Although it won’t feel like years since you’ve seen the sun… only a few minutes!

  1. “During a solar eclipse, the sun literally becomes a dark star”

Well, not really, unless you are using the word “literally” in some funny sense… 🙂

But on a more constructive note: Einstuerzende Neubauten “Total Eclipse of the Sun”

    1. Yes Jorg, we were definitely trying to be a bit humorous with our phrasing. Thanks for the additional song!

  2. how bout these
1-when the lights go down in the city
2-lucy in the sky with diamonds (diamond ring effect before totality)
    3-shadow of the night
4-I wear my sunglasses at night
    5-blinded by the light

  3. How could you miss Paint it Black? “I wanna see the sun, blotted out from the sky”.

    1. We’re not sure, Bruce! That’s a great one. We’re adding it to our Spotify playlist.
