Transaction further enables Whisker Labs to better focus on developing and delivering advanced home intelligence technologies; Earth Networks to focus on weather intelligence for commercial and public sector organizations globally

Germantown, MD and Oakland, CA – August 17, 2017 Earth Networks, the leading global provider of weather intelligence solutions, today announced its intent to spin off Whisker Labs, which is bringing advanced home intelligence technologies to market. The transaction creates two focused companies dedicated to delivering data-driven innovation within their respective markets.

As a result, Earth Networks Founder and CEO Robert Marshall has become CEO of Whisker Labs. Earth Networks President and COO Rich Spaulding, who has been with the company since 2004, has been elevated to CEO of Earth Networks.

Whisker Labs has achieved rapid traction in the home intelligence category since becoming a standalone unit within Earth Networks in December 2016. Whisker Labs’ sensing and software analytics platform quickly taps the electrical network to connect all appliances in the home, in turn delivering real-time power usage data that is converted into appliance and home health performance and efficiency diagnostics.

“99 percent of appliances in the home are not connected, which means that homeowners exist in an information vacuum when it comes to knowing the health and well-being of their appliances like refrigerators, dishwashers and washer/dryers,” said Bob Marshall, CEO, Whisker Labs. “As an independent company, Whisker Labs will be more strongly positioned to bring to market innovative data, analysis and automation services that enable home intelligence for consumers, and tremendous value for our customers such as home platform, home services and energy providers who deliver these services.”

Earth Networks owns and operates the world’s largest proprietary network of weather sensors, including more than 10,000 exclusive weather stations which update with live data every two seconds. And with over 1,500 sensors in 90 countries measuring lightning globally, Earth Networks Total Lightning Network is the most extensive and technologically advanced lightning network in the world.  These networks power Earth Networks range of innovative weather data and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) decision support, collaboration and visualization tools that help organizations automate critical weather-related decisions in real-time.

“The spin-off of Whisker Labs reaffirms Earth Networks’ ability to incubate and bring to market innovative high-value data solutions,” said Rich Spaulding, CEO, Earth Networks. “Our global points of presence provide real-time, hyperlocal insights and continue to drive a growing portfolio of data services to help commercial and governments organizations mitigate operational, financial and human risk on a daily basis across the world.”
