Precipitation Layers
Picture this: There is a sudden summer thunderstorm and rain starts falling like crazy but stops within an hour of starting. Did enough rain fall over the past hour to flood your buildings? Now we can help you answer this question better than ever before.
We’re excited to introduce two new Map Layers for the U.S. to provide accurate precipitation accumulation amounts. These two new layers are:
- Rain Water Amount
- Snowfall Amount
Users can find these new layers under the “Severe Weather” Map Layer menu on the left side of Sferic Maps. These layers offer accumulation amounts for the last 1, 3, 6, 12, and 24 hours. What’s more is that they’re easy to use in conjunction with other Map Layers because users can toggle the opacities.
Alerts Based on the User’s Location
Originally, we offered severe weather alerting based on conditions at a fixed location such as your organization’s latitude and longitude.
Now, we also offer notifications based on conditions at a mobile location. That means we can send you notifications for weather conditions you’re most worried about no matter where you are as long as have Sferic Mobile for your iOS or Android smartphone.

We see this being extremely useful for athletic directors with student-athletes visiting other schools as well as reporters covering weather stories outside of the studio.
Forecast Improvements in the Online Weather Center and Sferic API
We improved the hourly forecast for precipitation probability, precipitation type, and precipitation amounts in both the Online Weather Center and Sferic API.
